The Mainstream Left Has Embraced Violence As A Viable Option

The attacker who raised a cathead brass-knuckle dagger to stab New York Congressman Lee Zeldin yesterday at a rally where the Republican was campaigning for governor was released on his own recognizance hours after his arrest.

Even for bail-happy New York, this seems a bridge too far. But Rep. Zeldin had predicted it exactly as it turned out:

His words as he tried to stab me a few hours ago were “you’re done”, but several attendees, including @EspositoforNY, quickly jumped into action & tackled the guy. Law enforcement was on the scene within minutes. The attacker will likely be instantly released under NY’s laws.

This seems rather odd. We are told by the media and their preferred politicians that our democracy is facing a death threat from the American people, specifically from the Republican Party and its supporters. And yet when death threats are actually made and steps taken to make them a reality, they are more than eager to look the other way.

So a troll comedian calling AOC his favorite “big booty Latina” is a reason to condemn Capitol police for failing to protect members of Congress — but a man grabbing a congressman with blade raised? He’s free to go. There can be no tolerance of violent threats toward members of the January 6 committee — but a man crossing the country to show up armed at Bret Kavanaugh’s house? That’s barely worth a peep from the New York Times. He was just another guy traveling with his tools.

At some point, we need to reckon with a new reality: that the level to which the left has embraced justifications of violence and whitewashed threats of violence since the Summer of Floyd is incredible, unlike anything we've seen since The Weatherman. From January 1969-October 1970, New York City saw an average of more than one bombing every other day. But that method of violence wasn’t receiving defenses as justifiable and reasonable from the heights of political and major media institutions of the day.

Now, instead of automatic denunciations of an act of violence, captured on video, against a prominent member of Congress from the state with more media than any other, the attitude from the left and their media mouthpieces amounts to: Well, what does he expect? He’s a Republican in New York. It’s almost as bad as making eye contact with a stranger.

The problem in the immediate is that this type of activity is only likely to increase as the left’s agenda dfaces rejection at the ballot box. The failure of political leaders to take any steps toward condemnation, the most radical voices on corporate media stoking fears, and the loudest accounts on social media baying for blood, is a witch’s brew designed to encourage an environment where random people, crazy or hopeless or deluded, seek to destroy those who they are reliably informed are their enemy and the enemy of all that is good.

At some point, the luck runs out. The blade connects. And some politician is going to get killed.

“In a fully developed bureaucracy there is nobody left with whom one can argue, to whom one can present grievances, on whom the pressures of power can be exerted. Bureaucracy is the form of government in which everybody is deprived of political freedom, of the power to act; for the rule by Nobody is not no-rule, and where all are equally powerless, we have a tyranny without a tyrant.”
